Loan Officer II

Loan Officer II, Non-Exempt

Reports To: Branch Manager

Loan Officers at Advantage Credit Union aren’t just a paper pushers, they’re difference makers! The Loan Officer II is responsible for originating, processing, and servicing a full range of consumer, mortgage and credit card loans, while maintaining portfolio quality through sound underwriting practices. This position also manages the first stage of loan delinquency collections and promotes member financial success by cross-selling appropriate credit union products and services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following are fundamental duties that an individual who holds the position must perform. This is not an exhaustive list. Other duties, in addition to these essential job functions, will be assigned at the discretion of management.

Consumer & Mortgage Lending

  • Interview, evaluate, and process applications for consumer and mortgage loans in accordance with credit union policies and regulatory guidelines.

  • Evaluate loan risk through careful analysis of credit reports, income, collateral, and debt ratios in accordance with credit union policy.

  • Discuss loan alternatives, credit criteria, interest rates, and loan documentation to ensure members are informed and confident in their decisions.

  • Explain reasons for denial and assist members with alternative solutions when applicable.

  • Accurately prepare, review, and disburse loan documentation in a timely manner.

  • Process dealer and online loan applications; promptly communicate approvals, denials, and counter offers; review dealer packets for accuracy.

  • Perform thorough underwriting of consumer, mortgage and credit card loans, ensuring sound credit decisions based on member ability, stability, and willingness to repay.

Credit Card Services

  • Cross-sell, approve, issue, and maintain credit card accounts.

  • Assist members with credit card applications, servicing, dispute resolution, and questions.

Collections

  • Perform first-stage collection efforts on delinquent accounts. (e.g., 10-90 day’s delinquent)

  • Contact members to discuss repayment solutions, negotiate arrangements, and document collection activity.

  • Assist in developing repayment solutions for members at risk of delinquency, while protecting the credit union’s interest.

Member Service & Cross-selling

  • Provide financial counseling to assist members in managing and understanding their financial affairs.

  • Identify member needs and recommend appropriate loan and non-loan products, including debt protection, GAP, warranty, and other value-added services.

  • Deliver excellent service by resolving member inquiries in person, by phone, or by directing them to the appropriate department.

Compliance & Professional Development

  • Ensure compliance with credit union lending policies, procedures, and applicable state/federal regulations.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of lending trends, products, and regulatory requirements.

  • Participate in community and credit union promotional activities to support lending growth.

  • Develop a strong understanding of credit union history, philosophy, organization, and operational procedures.

Other Duties

  • Maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality in all member transactions.

  • Contribute a culture of accountability, honesty, respect, growth and empathy.

  • Perform other duties as required by management.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of consumer and mortgage lending practices, regulations, and compliance requirements.

  • Familiarity with credit card processing and servicing.

  • Working knowledge of federal and state lending regulations, including, TILA, Reg Z, RESPA, ECOA, FCRA, HMDA, SAFE Act NCUA guidelines.

  • Strong underwriting skills with the ability to assess risk, structure loans appropriately, and make sound credit decisions.

  • Ability to balance member needs with prudent lending practices that minimize delinquency.

  • Ability to analyze credit reports, financial statements, and collateral values.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information in simple terms.

  • Proficiency with loan origination systems, core banking platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Commitment to providing exceptional member service and promoting the credit union’s mission.

  • Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information.

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with members and colleagues.

  • Prepare and review written documents accurately and completely.

  • Respond to member inquires by phone or in person with professionalism and courtesy.

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others.

  • Support team to reach common goals.

  • Listen and respond appropriately to the concerns of other employees.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to plan and organize.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, college coursework in business, finance, or a related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in consumer and mortgage lending at a financial institution.

  • Experience with credit card processing.

  • Experience in collection process preferred.

  • Knowledge of lending practices, Federal and State regulatory laws is required.

  • Requires registration of mortgage loan originators (MLOs) through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS)
